Assault case: NDF activists surrender before court

KALPETTA, JUNE 3 . Four persons who had been accused of beating up a Hindu youth who married a Muslim woman surrendered before the Chief Judicial Magistrate here on Wednesday.

The Kalpetta police said the four persons, Nasser, Moidutty, Mammootty and Mahfuse, relatives of the Muslim girl, were known activists of the National Development Front (NDF) in Nadakkal area in Mananthavady.

They were remanded to judicial custody.

According to the version given to the police by the youth, Biju (28) of Ambalakunnu, near Gudallaikunnu, he was beaten up on May 12 last by the relatives of his wife, Nabisath Misili.

The four accused, who were NDF activists, came to his residence and beat him up for refusing to convert to Islam.

Misili, who has a six-year-old child, was the neighbour of Biju, an autorickshaw driver.

Her first husband had abandoned her more than five years back.

Biju and Misili fell in love and they eloped.

Misili's father filed a petition in Kalpetta police station and both appeared before the court. Misili expressed her desire to go with Biju, which was granted by the court.

However, on May 12 last, Biju was beaten up allegedly by the relatives of Misili.

He had sustained serious injuries on the joints of two legs and one hand.

The DYFI State secretary, A. Pradeep Kumar, visited Biju at the hospital on Thursday.
