VC takes

charge

KOCHI, NOV. 29. The new Vice-Chancellor of the Cochin University of Science and Technology, P.K. Abdul Aziz, took charge of his office today. The marine biologist, who has been teaching for over 25 years in various capacities, was professor at the Aquatic Biology and Fisheries Department in Kerala University. He was received at the University office by the Registrar, A. Ramachandran; the Finance Officer, Sebastian Ouseph, and the Public Relations Officer, S. Anil Kumar.

Central nod for dredging work

The Cochin Port Trust (CPT) will begin the dredging work shortly at the port to increase the draught depth of the present channel to 12.5 metres. The CPT Chairman, Jacob Thomas, told The Hindu over phone from New Delhi that the proposal in this connection has been approved by the Union Government. The work could be started during this financial year, he said.

Quiz contest

A three-member team of Bhavan's Vidya Mandir, Elamakkara, became champions in an inter-school quiz competition organised by the Southern Naval Command here today. The team of Bhavan's Vidyamandir, Eroor, bagged the second prize and that of Bhavan's Vidya Mandir, Girinagar, the third. The competition was organised in connection with the Navy Week celebrations.

Pat for NIALS

The Education Minister E.T. Mohammed Basheer has said that the Government would extend all possible support for the efforts to raise the National Institute for Advances Legal Studies (NIALS), Kaloor, to the status of a University. Inaugurating the first Inter-collegiate Debating Competition organised by the NIALS Students Association on Monday, Mr. Basheer commended the role played by institutions like the NIALS in promoting legal education. The Kerala Bar Council chairman, K.B. Mohandas, presided over the function.
