Archbishop turns 70 on

Monday

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, AUG. 14. The Archbishop of Thiruvananthapuram, Cyril Mar Baselios, will turn 70 on August 16. The Archbishop was ordained as a priest on October 4, 1960. On November 6, 1995, the Pope elevated him to the position of the third metropolitan of the Thiruvananthapuram archdiocese. The Archbishop is at present the vice-president of the Catholic Bishops Conference of India(CBCI).

Campaign

The CMFRI-Aquarium Campaign to demand that the aquarium at Vizhinjam be retained there itself, will be kicked off with the posting of 2,000 letters to the President, the Prime Minister, the Union Agriculture Minister, the Chief Minister and to the leaders of the opposition, both at the centre and at the State, on August 18. The letters containing this demand will be posted by school children at the Model Post Office, Venganoor. The campaign will start at 9.30 a.m.

Ombudsman misled

The Humanity Trust of India has charged that the Ombudsman is being misled on the matter of the ban on begging. A press note issued here today said that the Ombudsman is being used to derail the rehabilitation of beggars in the city. Those who set out to eradicate begging by the rehabilitation route are now trying to achieve their goal by driving away the beggars, the press note said.

V. Sudhakar Rao and C.G. Nandakumar have taken charge as the president and secretary, respectively, of the Rotary Club of Trivandrum.

Surgery for

deafness

A `Cochlear Implant surgery' was carried out the other day at the Santhwana Hospital, a press note issued here today said. It has been claimed that the hospital is the second in the State to carry out this surgery. The implant was done on a 45-year-old man, who had lost his hearing following an accident, the press note added.
