App plays saviour to the flood-hit

AmritaKripa, a multilingual disaster management app launched by researchers of the Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, has helped locate, rescue and provide relief to over 12,000 flood victims across Kerala.

Available for free download at Google Play Store, the user-friendly app can be used during any kind of natural calamities. During floods, the researchers at the Amrita Center for Wireless Networks and Applications (AmritaWNA) had customised the app to streamline the rescue, relief and rehabilitation efforts.

According to Amrita officials, the app was developed keeping in mind the various needs of the end users, including disaster survivors, relief providers, relief-camp coordinators, rescue teams and administrators.

“By directly linking the help-seekers and providers in a post-disaster environment using smartphones and the Internet, we are helping expedite the relief-and-rescue operations and improve their effectiveness,” said Maneesha Sudheer, Director, AmritaWNA.
