KANNUR: An Assistant Public Prosecutor (APP) was arrested here on Saturday by the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) on bribery charges.

The APP at the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court II here, K.M. Asainar, was arrested by a VACB team led by Dy.SP K.P. Narayanan in the morning while accepting a bribe of Rs.200 at his office from P. Mohanan, a Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam activist at Pappinissery. The arrest followed the VACB team laying a trap after a complaint from Mohanan that the APP was demanding cash from him in connection with a case he had filed.

The complainant, a retired employee in a cooperative bank, had been asked to contact the APP recently in connection with the case of an attack on his house by CPI(M) workers in 2003. According to the complainant, the APP had demanded money from him for ensuring favourable judgment. He had reached the APP's office on June 3 and gave him Rs.100. The APP then demanded more.
