Anti-pollution stir to shift venue to collectorate

The venue of the ongoing struggle against polluting plywood manufacturing units in Perumbavoor will be shifted from Kuruppampady to Kakkanad next week. The agitation will be launched in front of the collectorate, according to activists of the Action Council for Environmental Protection, which is spearheading the stir.

People affected by pollution from plywood units had begun a satyagraha in front of the house of Rayamangalam panchayat president at Kuruppampady in February last. Earlier, the agitation was launched in front of the panchayat office at Rayamangalam. The present phase of agitation has crossed 150 days. The struggle is being strengthened as the response from authorities has been unsatisfactory, according to the activists.

The people’s forum has engaged an expert panel of environmentalists to study the issue and the District Collector has sought an official report from the concerned. A Centrally empowered committee appointed by the Supreme Court had submitted a report on the pollution caused by plywood units in Vengola panchayat last year. The CEC had detected gross violation of norms by the majority of plywood units there.
