Accident at level-crossing: car seized, driver held

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A car that rammed into the closed level crossing gate between Irinjalakuda and Pudukkad railway stations, near Thrissur, on July 3, causing heavy damage to the gate and the lifting barrier, had been seized by the Railway Protection Force.

According to the railways, the car involved in the incident that took place at 5.20 a.m., when the gates were closed for the passage of the 2644 Nizamuddin-Thiruvananthapuram Express, was seized from a workshop near Potta Ashram in Chalakudy.

The damaged gate that was protruding on the railway track hit against the engine of the train. The cost of the damage to the railways had been assessed to be Rs.30,000. The car was also damaged. The driver of the car, C. J. Varghese, was arrested from the workshop and produced in the Judicial First Class Magistrate, Chalakudy.
