`Academics must work as a corrective force'

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Sept. 26. The academic community had the moral responsibility to function as a corrective force in society and lead politicians and those in power in the right direction, according to the noted critic, Sukumar Azhikode.

Inaugurating a seminar on the topic, `Challenges facing commerce education in India in the regime of globalisation', organised here today by the Department of Commerce of the University of Kerala, he maintained that the teaching community seemed to be in a slumber, completely oblivious of its duties and responsibilities.

Politicians should be subjected to social auditing. Those in authority should not be spared from criticism. It seems that they were more interested in the incentives available from the package that was globalisation, Dr.Azhikode said.

For globalisation to deliver the goods, there should be a level playing ground and the match should be evenly poised. It should be a game between equals and not like what it was at the moment. He maintained that in the name of liberalisation and privatisation, attempts were on to shackle society. It was for the academic community to liberate society from chains, he added.

Dr.Azhikode released a souvenir published by the alumni association of the Department of Commerce by handing over a copy to M.Gangadhara Kurup, Chairman, Kerala Public Service Commission, who presided over the function.
