KERALA

`A symbol of courage and humility'

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala Assembly Speaker Therambil Ramakrishnan said the decision to hold a special session to pay homage to K. R. Narayanan as a mark of respect to a person who travelled to heights through the thorny path and rose to become a symbol of courage and humility.

Making the obituary reference in the first-ever special session of the Assembly to be held for such a purpose on Monday, Mr. Ramakrishnan pointed out that Narayanan had proved that the position of President was not an ornamental position, but an opportunity to wield power with discretion and protect the sanctity of the Constitution with courage and firmness.

Narayanan, he said, had discovered India before India discovered him. His interactions with Gandhiji, B. R. Ambedkar, Jawharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi had played a major part in the formation of his personality.

He rose to the highest office in the country through sheer hard work and determination and has thus become a model for the younger generation in the whole country.
