Week-long Maramon Convention on the Pampa sand-bed concludes today

PATHANAMTHITTA: Samuel Kobia, general secretary of the World Council of Churches, has called upon the youth to strive for strengthening human relationships in the modern world of chaos.

Dr. Kobia was inaugurating the platinum jubilee celebrations of the Mar Thoma Yuvajana Sakhyam, youth association of the Mar Thoma Syrian Church of Malabar, on the Pampa riverbed at Maramon, near Kozhencherry, on Saturday.

He said the young generation should take the initiative to facilitate constructive dialogues between different sections on various issues facing society. The youth could do a great deal in checking infiltration of anti-social forces, which posed a major threat to the otherwise calm and peace-loving society. Inter-faith, inter-personal and intra-personal dialogues were needed to solve modern-day social ills and other social crises, Dr. Kobia said.

Christian approach

He said the Christian approach to various social ills was the path of dialogues. The link between the past, present and future should be properly maintained to ensure success in life. Learn lessons from the past, change according to that in the present and pass on the wisdom to the future generation was what expected from the followers of Jesus Christ, he added.

Dr. Kobia said the grave social issue of poverty had been miserably sidelined in the name of industrialisation. Voice of the marginalised sections of society still remained feeble and wanton plunder of natural resources was on the rise, leaving the world and the fate of humanity in peril. The bane of religious fundamentalism was another grave issue facing the modern world.

Dr. Kobia said that youth power, if effectively and properly utilised, could contain all these social ills facing the modern world through dialogues.

Sakhyam president Issac Mar Peelexinos presided. Joseph Mar Ireneus Saffragan Metropolitan and Zacharias Mar Theophilus Saffragan Metropolitan spoke.

Anni Lotz, daughter of the evangelist Billi Graham, delivered the keynote address at the afternoon session. Joseph Mar Ireneus Saffragan Metropolitan delivered a religious discourse in the evening. The weeklong religious meet concludes on Sunday.
