PALAKKAD: The Comprehensive Water Supply Scheme (CWSS) to provide drinking water to Nemmara, Ayilur and Melarcode grama panchayats will be inaugurated by Minister for Water Resources N.K. Premachandran at Park Maidan, Nemmara, on October 20.

The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) had taken up the expansion and renovation of the CWSS, commissioned in 1984 under Minimum Needs Programme (MNP), to provide drinking water to the aforesaid panchayats. The scheme, which was originally meant to cater to the needs of nearly 24,000 people will now benefit around 57,000 people. The major share of the project cost of Rs.110 lakh was borne by the MLA State Development Fund (MLASDF) of Kollengode MLA V. Chenthamarakshan.

The renovated scheme will provide a permanent solution to the drinking water crisis in Chittur taluk and enhance the supply level from 10-40 litres per capita per day to 40-70 litres. Jayachandran, Assistant Executive Engineer, KWA, Chittur, said that only minor changes needed to be made on the original CWSS to bring about this improvement. The scheme makes use of the surface water stored in the Pothundi reservoir more judiciously. The bore well sources can now be dispensed with.
