Mullappally Ramachandran breaches a red fortress.

KOZHIKODE: Perhaps, the most spectacular win for the United Democratic Front (UDF) is in Vadakara, where Mullappally Ramachandran of the Congress won with a majority of 56,186 votes.

The Vadakara Lok Sabha constituency had been returning candidates of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) or its allies since the 1980 elections. Mr. Ramachandran trounced P. Sathi Devi of the CPI(M), who was seeking re-election. He polled 4,21,255 votes against her 3,65,069.

In the last elections, Ms. Sathi Devi polled 4,29,294 votes against the UDF candidate’s 2,98,705 — a majority of 1,30,589 votes, the highest in the State then. This time, the Bharatiya Janata Party, which has fielded K.P. Sreesan again, polled only 40,391 votes against the 81,901 votes that he had polled last time.

T.P. Chandrasekharan, candidate put up by CPI(M) dissidents who have formed the Edathupaksha Ekopana Samithi (Left Coordination Committee), polled 21,833 votes. He polled the highest of 9,636 votes in the Vadakara Assembly segment. Mr. Ramachandran was able to cash in on the campaign against the CPI(M) by the Janata Dal (S), whose presence in the constituency, though limited, was its largest in the State. Muslim League leaders and cadres toiled hard for his victory, along with Congress leaders and workers. Ms. Sathi Devi could manage a lead only in the Thalassery Assembly segment, polling 56,582 votes over Mr. Ramachandran’s 47,478. In the rest of the six segments, he took the lead. He got 61,723 votes in Perambra; 61,258 in Koyilandy; 66,731 in Nadapuram, 64,119 in Kuttiyadi; 60,499 in Vadakara; and 57,863 in Koothuparamba.

She won 57,461 votes in Perambra; 50,158 in Koyilandy; 58,309 in Nadapuram, 55,500 in Kuttiyadi; 35,743 in Vadakara; and 49,251 in Koothuparamba.

Mr. Ramachandran said his victory was a result of the public’s anger against the Left Democratic Front government and a setback to the political arrogance of the CPI(M). He said he had even got the votes of the CPI(M) dissidents.
