Commercial-tax collection in Ernakulam to be upgraded

Plan to improve tax administration in Ernakulam district

Independent panel to carry out social audit

KOCHI: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan will inaugurate here a “From Walayar to Ernakulam” project aimed at improving tax administration in the district on Tuesday.

It is a follow-up of the corruption-free Walayar project launched by the State government recently.

Giving details here on Monday, Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac said commercial-tax collection in Ernakulam would be scientifically upgraded using data collected from the Walayar check-post.

A citizen’s charter would be brought out to publicise the services being offered by the tax department. Offices would be modernised to provide better facilities to traders.

Mega adalat

Pending cases regarding tax collection would be settled within a timeframe. Nearly 3,000 cases would be settled at a mega adalat at Ernakulam Town hall on Tuesday.

Elaborating on the highlights of the project, the Minister said a scientific scrutiny of value-added-tax returns would be carried out soon. Revenue-mobilisation programmes would be launched and tax counters made corruption-free.

Helpdesk

Dr. Isaac said a facilitation centre and helpdesk would be opened to resolve doubts on tax rates. Traders would be trained in e-filing of tax returns. A district-level complaint-redress cell would be opened. Complaints could be registered online. An independent panel would carry out a social audit to evaluate the progress of the project.
