Panchayat chief resigns from NCP

KALPETTA: The United Democratic Front (UDF) is set to gain control of the district panchayat with the resignation of panchayat president C.M. Sarasamma from the Nationalist Congress Party, an ally of the Left Democratic Front (LDF).

At present, the UDF has nine seats in the 16-member panchayat board.

Ms. Sarasamma told mediapersons here on Tuesday that she had decided to resign from the NCP and expressed her wish to join the Congress. The UDF had moved a no-confidence motion against the district panchayat president on Monday. When the district panchayat board came to power, the LDF had the support of nine members, including Communist Party of India (Marxist) — 5 seats, Communist Party of India (CPI) — 1, NCP — 2 and Janata Dal (S) — 1. The UDF had the support of seven members, including Congress — 5 and Indian Union Muslim League — 2.

Later, both fronts got equal number of seats in the panchayat board after an NCP member joined the Congress a few years ago. George Pothan, the lone member of JD(S) did not sign the no-confidence notice. Mr. Pothan said he had informed the JD(S) leadership and would vote as advised by the leadership.
