For the first time, the UDF won in three block panchayats. Kunnamangalam block, earlier a fortress of the LDF, witnessed a tie.

The LDF leadership attributed the victory of UDF to the front's “unholy alliance with communal forces.” The UDF colluded with the Bharatiya Janata Party in several panchayats, they alleged.

UDF leaders K.C. Abu and M.C Mayin Haji said the front's candidates posted surprising victory over the LDF in 28 grama panchayats. “The victory in Atholi, Mavoor, Perumanna, Thuneri, Eramala and Cheruvannur panchayats were not even expected, they said.

Onchiyam effect

In Onchiyam panchayat, the Independents who contested under the banner of Revolutionary Marxist Party (RMP) came out victorious in eight seats. When LDF secured five seats, the UDF got four. Earlier, the panchayat was a citadel of the Communist party of India (Marxist).

The RMP leaders have made it clear that they will not rule the panchayat with the support of UDF.

The present stance of UDF is that it will extend support the RMP to put an end to the CPI (M) dominance in the panchayat.

  • Of 12 block panchayats, LDF wins 8 and UDF 3
