Two new eparchies for Syro-Malankara Church

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Syro-Malankara Church has created two new eparchies and appointed four new bishops.

This was announced by Major Archbishop Baselios Cleemis Catholicos at St. Mary’s Cathedral, the headquarters of the Syro-Malankara Church in Thiruvananthapuram, and in Rome simultaneously on Monday evening.

The Major Archbishop said the new Eparchy of Pathanamthitta has been created by bifurcating the present Major Archieparchy of Thiruvananthapuram. Its territory consists of four ecclesiastical districts -- Pathanamthitta, Konni, Ranni-Perunadu and Pandalam, and the parishes of Anandapally, Angadickal, Chandanappally, Pongalady and Thatta of the Adoor ecclesiastical district.

The present Bishop of Marthandam, Yohanon Mar Chrysostom, has been transferred to Pathanamthitta. The cathedral of the new eparchy will be St. Peter’s Church, Pathanamthitta.

The Eparchy of Puthur has been created by including the northern parts of the Eparchy of Bathery. The cathedral of the eparchy will be St. Joseph’s Church, Puthur.

The Major Archbishop announced that the present Bishop of Bathery, Geevarghese Mar Dionysius, has been transferred from Bathery to Puthur. The Apostolic Visitator to North America, Joseph Mar Thomas, has been appointed the Bishop of Bathery.

The Registrar and Professor of St. Mary’s Malankara Seminary, Thiruvananthapuram, Vincent Kulapuravilai, has been appointed as the new Bishop of Marthandom.

The Syncellus of the Major Archieparchy of Thiruvananthapuram, Samuel Kattukallil, and the Dean of the Faculty of Theology of St. Mary’s Malankara Seminary, Stephen Thottathil, have been appointed Auxiliary Bishops of the Major Archieparchy of Thiruvananthapuram and Archieparchy of Thiruvalla respectively.

The Postulator of the Cause of Canonisation of Servant of God Archbishop Mar Ivanios and Chancellor of the Major Archiepiscopal Curia, Antony Valiyavilayil, has been appointed as the Bishop of the Curia.

The announcement was made in the presence of bishops.
