Traders injured in lathi-charge

KOZHIKODE: The police arrested 33 traders who were staging a token protest in front of the Spencer’s Supermarket, and allegedly trying to barge into the supermarket premises at Chakkorathukulam here on Saturday morning. They were let off on bail later in the day.

According to the traders, a token dharna was organised by them under the aegis of the Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithi (KVVES) in front of the supermarket to register protest against the entry of multinational companies into the retail sector.

U. Abdurehman, KVVES district president, alleged that the police had driven away the traders without any provocation.

Sources said that one of the shutters of the supermarket was not closed, and the traders requested that this too be downed.

Their request was not heeded by the police and some of the traders tried to enter the supermarket.

The police intervened and drove away the traders using lathis.

As many as 20 traders were injured in the incident and two of the injured were admitted to hospital.

Those arrested and let off on bail included T. Nassiruddin, KVVES president; K.P. Sreedharan, district general secretary; Sethumadhavan, Dennis and Shahul Hameed, district secretaries, besides Kappiat Chandran, district vice- president, and Abdul Rasheed, KVVES Youth wing district president.

Those injured in the incident and hospitalised were T. Gopalan, KVVES Nadakkavu unit president, and Moosa Koya, Puthiyapalam unit general secretary.
