Thunchan fete from February 3

MALAPPURAM: The Thunchan Festival, arguably the State’s biggest literary festival, will be held at Thunchanparambu, Tirur, from February 3.

Shamsur Rahman Faruqi, Urdu poet and critic, will inaugurate the five-day literary festival. M.T. Vasudevan Nair, Jnanpith laureate, who chairs the Thunchan Memorial Trust, will preside.

Anne Waldman, American poet, will be the chief guest at the inaugural. K.C. Narayanan will deliver the Thunchan Memorial Lecture.

A national seminar on dissent, protest, and literature in honour of Kamala Suraiyya will mark the festivities. Sukumar Azhikode, critic, will inaugurate the seminar jointly organised by the Sahitya Akademi and the trust. Satchidanandan, poet, will deliver the keynote address.

Hariharan, filmmaker, will inaugurate the Thunchan arts festival on February 3 evening.

Hindi writer Mridula Marg, Kannada writer L.C. Sumithra, Marathi writer Pushpa Bhave and Telugu writer Abburi Chayadevi will share the experiences with their respective mother tongues on February 4. Poetry competition and a quiz will be held for college students.

P. Vatsala, writer, will speak on facts and fiction in a session on the chequered shades of Kamala Suraiyya on February 5 afternoon.

Zachariah, writer, will speak on revolt as writing. Sara Joseph, writer, will speak on philosophising the self. Balachandran Chullikkad, poet, will speak on poetic tinge in writing.

Sugathakumari, poet, will inaugurate a South Indian poets’ meeting organised by the South Zone Cultural Centre, Thanjavur, on February 6 morning. Akkitham, poet, will preside.

D. Vinayachandran, poet, will inaugurate a seminar of poets on “My writing, my times.” Poets from all South Indian languages will present their works.

Speaker K. Radhakrishnan will inaugurate the valedictory session on February 7. E.T. Mohammed Basheer, MP, will preside. A. Vijayaraghavan, MP, will deliver the keynote address.
