KOCHI: A district level review committee for the Tsunami Rehabilitation Package (TRP) has approved three projects, including one worth Rs.2.45 crore for seawall construction, at a meeting held at the collectorate on Thursday.

District Collector M. Beena presided. MLAs, M.K. Purushothaman and V.K. Ibrahim Kunju attended the meeting.

The seawall construction would be taken up in the area between Cherai and Edavanakkad. Though there was a proposal to give service connections in the West Kochi region under the electricity department, in view of inadequate beneficiaries a demand was raised to convert it into a scheme for setting up streetlights. Following this, the meeting allowed the respective grama panchayats to implement the project according to their requirements.

The meeting decided to re-submit the Kuzhupilly and Chendamangalam tourism projects to the State government for administrative sanction.

The land acquisition proceedings for setting up flats along the coastal region would be completed quickly. The project would have 486 beneficiaries. Though many landowners had already given the consent letters, the meeting recommended intensifying the proceedings.

The scholarship of the education department had been limited to Rs.3,000.

With those completing class tenth going out of the ambit of the scholarship, the meeting suggested that children joining first standard be included into the beneficiary list.

Mr. Kunju said that no works of the electricity department had been started in the coastal regions in Mattancherry. Dr. Beena instructed the electricity department officials to submit the estimate of works to be carried out by the next meeting and to launch the works without further delay.

Complaints were also raised that the harbour engineering department that had already received approval for constructions works worth Rs.8.87 crore had not started works anywhere.

Out of the 40 roads approved under the TRP, construction of 19 roads had already been completed. Tender proceedings for five roads had been completed.

Deputy Collector P. Indira, nodal officer of the tsunami cell, representatives of various local self-government bodies and other officials attended the meeting.
