Thoduva colony attacks: VS urged to intervene

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) has urged Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan to intervene urgently to check the repeated attacks on Dailts living in the Thoduva colony at Varkala.

In a memorandum to Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, PUCL Kerala general secretary P.A. Pouran pointed out that the Dalits in the colony were being attacked by Shiv Sena activists from time to time.

Although the victims of such attacks had approached the police, there was no positive response.

When Chellamma, an aged woman, had approached the Varkala police after she was attacked, the police had taken a negative stand.

Chellamma was threatened with dire consequences if she persisted with such complaints.

This was followed by attacks on the huts of many in the area, but in this instance too, the police did not entertain their complaints, Mr. Pouran said.

Probe sought

Mr. Pouran requested the Chief Minister to take steps to conduct an investigation by an officer of proven integrity to save the colony residents who belong to the Scheduled Castes.
