Tension near Thirumala

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Tension prevailed at Mangattukadavu near Thirumala on Monday evening after hundreds of activists of the Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh (RSS) and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) allegedly attempted to take over the administration of Annoor Devi Temple by forcefully securing the keys of the temple from the priest.

District Collector N. Ayyappan, who rushed to the spot following the incident, told The Hindu that a tense atmosphere prevailed there. Members of the Nair Service Society (NSS), who claimed to have been controlling the temple for over 30 years, strongly resisted the move by the activists.

The Collector issued an order asking the police to maintain status quo until a settlement was reached. Mr. Ayyappan directed the members of both groups to furnish all documents pertaining to the temple, which proved their rightful authority, in a week. The District Collector was accompanied by Additional District Magistrate in-charge K. Ramachandran and Tahsildar C.R. Krishnakumar.
