ALAPPUZHA: A 14-year-old Class X student committed suicide by hanging himself to a ceiling fan, reportedly after his parents scolded him for buying a mobile phone without their permission.

The incident took place at Mavelikara late Monday night. According to the Mavelikara police, the boy, who had a brilliant academic record, used his mother’s ATM card to withdraw money from her account without her knowledge and purchased a mobile phone worth Rs.6,500. He had been using the gadget for around two weeks without the knowledge of his parents, both of whom are schoolteachers.

On Monday night, the mother accidentally came to know about the phone and the parents are said to have scolded the boy.
