Technical snag delays trains

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Seven trains passing through Ernakulam district suffered delays ranging from one hour to three hours on Thursday, after the pantograph (a device used to carry electric current from overhead wires to a train) of the Thiruvananthapuram-Mangalore Parasuram Express got entangled in the electric line, between Katrikadavu and Thripunithura.

The electric line broke as a result and the trains that ought to have passed through the route were held up in different stations, from 11 a.m. onwards. Passengers were safe since the power-supply tripped as soon as the line broke.

Diesel engines were used to enable a few electric trains to cross the area.

The line was repaired at 3.15 p.m. and the held-up trains resumed service.

Apart from Parasuram Express, the trains that got delayed include the TVM-Hyderabad Express; Mangalore-TVM Express; Kanyakumari-Mumbai Express; Ernakulam-Kottayam Passenger, Hyderabad-TVM Express and the Garib Rath.
