THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Sixty ‘black spots' have been identified in the State on the basis of road accidents that occurred in 2009. Of them, 26 are in the southern districts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha.

The ‘black spots' in the road network passing through the State were identified by the police on the basis of three or more fatal road accidents and 15 or more non-fatal accidents that took place there in the January-December period last year. They are the most accident-prone stretches and the police have carried out detailed analysis to bring down the number of accidents.

Of the 26 black spots, eleven are in Thiruvananthapuram (6 in city and 5 in rural limits), four in Kollam district, one in Pathanamthitta and 10 in Alappuzha district.

Capital's figures

Pappanamcode, Karamana, Thiruvallom, Nemom, Plamood and Pongumood are the most accident-prone stretches in the capital. Pappanamcode and Thiruvallom witnessed seven fatal accidents each last year.

The highest number of non-fatal accidents among the six black spots in the city limits took place in Pappanamcode, 35, followed by 27 in Nemom and 26 in Thiruvallom.

In Thiruvananthapuram rural, the accident-prone areas are Thonakkal, Mamom-Attingal, Paroorkuzhi, Aralamodu and Vettikonam.

The highest number of fatal accidents (four) and non-fatal ones (20) took place at Thonakkal in the NH-47 stretch. As many as 454 persons were killed and 3,465 seriously injured in 4,410 road accidents in the district in 2009, as per statistics compiled by the State Crime Records Bureau (SCRB).

In the capital city, 139 persons were killed and 1,973 injured in road accidents last year. In Plamood, one of the busiest junctions in the capital, several steps have been taken up by the PWD under the Kerala State Transport Project (KSTP) to ease congestion.

One in Pathanamthitta

In Kollam district, the black spots identified are Polayathode-Thattamala, Anchalamoodu, Kottiyam and Karunagapally.

The lone black spot in Pathanamthitta district is in Nellimootilpadi, Adoor. Polayathode-Thattamala accounted for 13 fatal accidents and 99 non-fatal accidents last year. Although only four fatal accidents took place in Kottiyam, the place was witness to 97 non-fatal accidents.

Among the four southern districts, the second highest number of 10 black spots is in Alappuzha district.

They are Aroor, Chanthiroor, Erumaloor, Ramankiri, Thottapalli, Thazhakara, Thattarambalam, Kalavoor-Pathirapally, R.K. Junction-Nangyarkulangara and Kalarcode.

The highest number of fatal accidents (13) and non-fatal accidents (38) took place at Aroor.

Non-fatal accidents

The highest number of 47 non-fatal accidents was reported from Kalavoor-Pathirapally. Kalarcode that witnessed seven fatal accidents also registered 46 fatal road accidents.

Of the remaining black spots, 11 are in Ernakulam district, seven in Kozhikode, five in Thrissur, four each in Palakkad and Malappuram, and one each in Kottayam, Idukki, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts.
