Kannur will host cultural fete for the first time

KANNUR: Music, dance and theatre programmes will be staged here during the five-day Soorya Festival beginning here on December 26 under the auspices of the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC).

Soorya Festival being hosted in the district for the first time would highlight traditional Indian culture during the five-day event to be held at the Town Square here, District Collector and DTPC chairperson Ishita Roy and Soorya Stage and Film Society founder Soorya Krishnamoorthy said at a press conference here on Tuesday.

Kannur was the sixth town in the State to host the programmes titled Soorya Festival, they said.

Mr. Krishnamoorthy said that the programmes being sponsored by Bhima Jewellery for five years would feature various stage programmes including a tribute to late playwright K.T. Mohammed. Selected scenes from his play ‘Ithu Bhoomiyanu’ would be staged by Kozhikode Kalinga Theatres following the inauguration of the festival at 6 p.m. on December 26. There would be performance of selected scenes from another play ‘Srishti’ on the concluding day on December 30. A fusion performance titled ‘Tharangam’ directed by Mr. Krishnamoorthy himself would be held on the first day.

The cultural programmes as part of the festival would be held in the evening during the event. Major programmes included classical dance performances and ‘Kurathiyattam’ programme. Entry to the venue of the cultural event was free, the organisers said.
