THIRUVANANTHPURAM: The Association of Public Health Engineers, Kerala, (APHEK) and the Association of Assistant Engineers have protested against the decision to entrust the charge of Kerala Water Authority (KWA) managing director to an accounts member. In a statement released here on Wednesday, APHEK general secretary S. Vijayakumar said that the move was against norms.

“Accounts member is an officer appointed for a short period from the Central services for audit related works, who has no technical knowledge about water distribution networks. The additional charge of KWA MD has been given to such an officer when according to norms it is necessary to appoint a chief engineer who has the technical know-how and work experience in KWA,” the statement said.

The statement demanded the immediate appointment of an officer not below the rank of Chief Engineer to the post of Managing Director.

A joint meeting of the two associations also protested against accusing KWA officers for interruption in drinking water distribution caused due to the lack of power supply. The statement said that these interruptions occurred because the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) cuts the power supply because of the failure of KWA to remit its electricity bill due to financial constraints.
