Roads to connect tourism spots soon, Kodiyeri

KASARAGOD: The State government plans to launch a road project aimed at connecting various tourism destinations in the State, Minister for Tourism and Home Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said on Monday said.

Speaking to The Hindu here, Mr. Balakrishnan said development of roads and other infrastructure were essential for the development of tourism in the State. The Minister observed that development of national highways in the State had not taken place because of the difference of opinion existed between the State and the Centre on the issue.

While the Union government wanted the State to sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with stipulations in it to collect from people as toll a part of the liability incurred to the government for road construction, the State government was against it. All other States in the country had signed the MOU while Kerala had not, the Minister said.

Mr. Balakrishnan said the State government would sort out the issue with the Union government and the Left Democratic Front had reached a consensus to make necessary changes in the stand of the government considering present realities, Mr. Balakrishnan said.

On the Utsavam-2007 programme of the State Tourism Department later launched by him at Bekal here, Mr. Balakrishnan said the aim of the government was to start permanent stages for performing tribal, folk and classical art forms. The tourism department would make a festival calendar, which would be made available to all tour operators the world over, the tourism minister said.
