Probe sought into generator repairs

Staff Reporter

PATHANAMTHITTA: The Kerala Vydyuthi Mazdoor Sanghom, affiliated to the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh, has demanded a judicial investigation into the alleged irregularities and corruption in the renovation, modernisation and upgrading of generators 3 and 4 of the Moozhiyar powerhouse of the Sabarigiri hydroelectric project.

In a statement here on Tuesday, its president, M.K. Kamalan, said the Kerala State Electricity Board authorities should have continuously run the two generators for 72 hours to ensure their efficacy before accepting the two machines from the contractors after the work. Instead, these were run intermittently.

Generator 4 exploded on May 16, killing three employees and injuring many.

Violation alleged

Mr. Kamalan alleged that the board authorities had permitted the contractors to store their equipment and other materials inside the powerhouse, violating the rules and guidelines and leaving scope for them to claim compensation from the board for the loss incurred to them in the fire.

The contractors have claimed compensation.
