Preparations on for theatre fete

Thrissur: Preparations are in full swing for the International Theatre Festival of Kerala to begin here on December 22. The 10-day festival, being organised by the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi, will feature 10 Asian plays. About 300 artistes from seven countries, including China, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal and Iran, will take part.

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, Akademi chairman Murali said that construction of a temporary auditorium in front of the Indoor Stadium, the venue for the festival, was at its final stage. The auditorium will accommodate about 2,000 spectators.

He said the festival would also be a platform to showcase Malayalam theatre. Nine short Malayalam plays will be staged. They are ‘Kannadi’ (Theatre Department of Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit); ‘Koshakrimi Nyayam’ (School of Drama and Fine Arts, Thrissur); ‘Kaliyamardanam’ (Prakash Kala Kendram, Kollam); ‘Ithivritham Shoonyam’ (Rengachetana); ‘Bheemananu Manushyan’ (Rajan Muliyar, Kasaragode); ‘Premalekhanam’ (Soorya); ’Arangil Oru Atmabhashanam’ (Gopalan); ‘Aboobackarinte Umma Parayunnu’ (Rajitha Madhu); ‘Theatre Sketches’ (Natakasanghom).

An exhibition of organic products will be held as part of the festival. The topics to be discussed in the festival include ‘Theatre and visual media: narrative in perspective’, ‘Theatre in Bangladesh’, ‘Theatre in Pakistani history, contemporary challenges and peculiarities’, ‘Political theatre of India-history, contemporary characteristics and challenges in the globalised era’, ‘Sinhabahu and modernity of tradition: history of Sri Lankan theatre’ and ‘Evolution and journey of Malayalam theatre’.
