Preparations on for Army Mela

Kozhikode: Military equipment including weapons that fortify the nation’s defences would be on display in the city on Sunday as part of the Army Mela being organised for the first time in the northern parts of the State.

An open exhibition of equipment would be opened for the public on Sunday outside the Corporation Stadium, an Army spokesman said. Preparations for the Army Mela were in full swing, the spokesman said.

Various Army teams would be showcasing their skills. The teams started arriving in the city on Thursday.

The 19-member Madras Regimental Centre Military Band arrived here from Wellington to perform during the Mela.

A 50-member Malkhamb and Lezim-display team arrived from the Maratha Regimental Centre, Bangalore. Malkhamb and Lezim are two traditional Maharashtrian gymnastic exercises.

Also, heavy equipment like BMP (armoured personnel carrier) and field gun are being brought from Thiruvananthapuram.

The 30-member strong ‘Shweta-ashwa’ motor-cycle stunts team of the Core of Military Police (CMP) will arrive in the city on Friday.
