Ponnani facing sea erosion

MALAPPURAM: The coastal belt of Malappuram district, particularly the 14-km stretch of Ponnani region between Azheekkal and Palappetty, reeled under the threat of being washed away as the sea began showing its anger on Tuesday. Seawater entered about two dozen houses at Ponnani, and a house was destroyed by the waves at Thannithura near Veliyamkode. The family of Hamza Hajiyarakath, whose house was destroyed, was shifted to a shelter camp opened at Government Fisheries Lower Primary School, Veliyamkode. A few dozen coconut trees were uprooted as the sea began eating into the shore.

Dozens of huts belonging to fishermen families and hundreds of coconut trees are facing the threat of destruction as the monsoon was still to open its floodgates.

Local people said Tuesday’s sea erosion could be just the beginning of this season’s fury of waves. The sea wall erected at many places in Ponnani was found ineffective.
