Preparations on for Chakkulathukavu fete

PATHANAMTHITTA: The annual Pongala festival at Chakkulathukavu Bhagavathy Temple at Neerettupuram, near Thiruvalla, will be held on Saturday.

In a statement issued here on Friday, temple administrator Manikkuttan Namboodiri said the Pongala festival would begin with the ‘Ashtadravya Ganapati homam’ at 4.30 a.m.

Guruvayur Devaswom committee member Gokulam Gopalan will formally inaugurate the festival at 9 a.m. Temple chief priest Radhakrishnan Namboodiri will light the main Pongala hearth at 9 a.m. Devaswom public relations officer Suresh Kavumbhagom said Pongala coupon counters had already been opened at the temple.

Mr. Suresh said the temple Devaswom had opened information centres on the temple premises as well as other parts of the taluk to spread awareness among the devotees about the customs and traditions of the ritualistic Pongala.

District Collector Raju Narayanaswamy and Thiruvalla Sub-Collector Pranab Jyothinath have jointly convened a meeting of various department heads and the Devaswom authorities to review the arrangements for the smooth conduct of the annual festival.

Mr. Suresh said Mavelikara MP C.S. Sujatha would inaugurate a cultural meet as part of the festival, later in the afternoon. Kuttanad MLA Thomas Chandy will preside over the meet.

Temple chief priest Radhakrishnan Namboodiri will deliver the benedictory speech. Inspector-General of Police K. Padmakumar will light the ‘Karthikasthambhom’ immediately after the ‘deeparadhana’ at the temple, marking the culmination this year’s Pongala festival.
