Police crack murder case

KOCHI: The crime branch has cracked a 10-month-old case of a missing person and arrested a couple on charges of murder. Ajaz, who was into real estate business at Kothamangalam, was reported to missing after he left his home on May 17, 2009, in one of his friend's car.

Kothamangalam police found that he had got down at the residence of another friend named Subhash. Even though Subhash was interrogated, no clue was obtained.

By this time, Shimey, wife of Ajaz, moved a habeas corpus petition in the High Court and the investigation was handed over to the crime branch. A special team under V. Sunil Kumar, DySP, started the probe in September 2009. While the investigation was on, Subhash and his wife Ambili went missing. The police came to know that he had sold his car before leaving the place. The car was found and traces of human blood were spotted in the boot of the vehicle. Investigations tracked the accused to Madurai. He and his wife were made to come to Kochi and were arrested on Tuesday.

On the basis of their confession, the accused were taken to a house at Puthupady, Kothamangalam. The remains of the missing person were exhumed from the compound. The victim's wife identified the T-shirt he was wearing when he had gone missing. The accused will be produced before magistrate on Wednesday.
