Patient dies after falling from stretcher

ALAPPUZHA: A 49-year-old patient died after he fell down from a ‘dilapidated’ stretcher while being shifted to the intensive care unit at the T.D. Medical College at Vandanam here on Sunday.

Two temporary nurses of the hospital have been suspended from service following a public outcry over the incident.

Abdul Salam, a resident of Kakkazham, near Ambalapuzha, was admitted to the hospital on Thursday after he complained of chest pain. His condition worsened on Sunday morning and the nurses brought a stretcher to shift him to the intensive care unit. However, when they placed him on the stretcher, it broke into two and the patient fell down. Though he was rushed to the ICU, he died soon after.

The incident triggered a public outcry with other patients and their helpers alleging that they had alerted the staff about the dilapidated condition of the stretcher. Political organisations took out protests marches to the hospital.

District Collector V.K. Balakrishnan and Deputy Superintendent of Police K.M. Tomy rushed to the hospital and assured the agitators that action would be taken against the staff concerned.
