PATHANAMTHITTA: The 66th Orthodox Syrian Convention, organised by the Niranom diocese of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, began on the Koithottu sandbank of the Manimala river at Kallooppara on Sunday.

Inaugurating the week-long religious congregation, senior metropolitan Geevarghese Mar Osthathios said parents had to play a key role in the process of social reformation. He said lack of awareness among children on social values had been leading to the erosion of these values.

Mar Osthathios said the mad rush after luxuries and worldly pleasures by sidelining the power of God was what led to all the misery and chaos in the world.

Niranom diocesan metropolitan Youhanon Mar Chrysostomos presided over the inaugural function. Former Vice-Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi University Cyriac Thomas delivered the keynote address. Joseph M. Puthussery, MLA; T.S. John, former MLA; Fr. Cherian P. Varghese; and Fr. Thomas Mathew; were among those who spoke.

The annual convention will come to a close on February 8.
