Chandy says CPI(M) move to control education

University statutes have been rendered meaningless: ChandyOrdinance will turn universities into branch committees: VC

KOTTAYAM: The Ordinance on the Higher Education Council promulgated by the Left Democratic Front (LDF) Government is aimed at destroying the autonomy of the universities in the State, the Opposition Leader Oommen Chandy has said.

He was inaugurating a seminar on `Higher Education' organised by the United Democratic Front-leaning M.G. University Teachers Organisation, M.G. University Employees Union and the Kerala Students Union, on the university campus on Saturday.

Mr. Chandy said the Communist Party of India (Marxist) was bent on bringing the higher education institutions under its control and the ordinance was part of its efforts in this direction.

The various university statutes drawn up after discussions with educationists and the Select Committee and Subject Committee of the Assembly, which had the representation of all political parties, have been rendered meaningless through the ordinance, he alleged.

Mr. Chandy flayed the alleged move of the Left organisations to forcefully bring the UDF-appointed Vice-Chancellors of Mahatma Gandhi University and Sree Sankara Sanskrit University, Kalady, under its control.

K.S. Radhakrishnan, Vice-Chancellor, Sree Sankara Sanskrit University, in his keynote address said the ordinance on the council would put an end to the diversity of voices and democratic character essential to the education culture of a democratic polity. The Ordinance gave the council authority to restructure higher education and granting of funds. It would turn the universities into branch committees of the party, he said.

George Varghese, who retired as Joint Registrar recently, was felicitated on the occasion. Jory Mathai, president KPCTA, presided. Thomas Chazhikkadan, MLA, Anto Antony, former DCC president, Kottayam, among others, spoke.
