P. Jayarajan’s complaint on Leader of the Opposition’s Kannur visit on April 16

Thiruvananthapuram: Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy has denied that he violated the model code of conduct and the Representation of the People Act by undertaking a visit to Kannur on election day on April 16. The Election Commission had sought his remarks on a complaint filed by Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader P. Jayarajan to the effect that Mr. Chandy had violated the model code and the Act.

In his reply to the query, Mr. Chandy gave a chronological description of his visit beginning with his departure from Kottayam after casting his vote for the Lok Sabha elections. He asserted that he had not gone anywhere near any polling booth nor had he campaigned for the UDF candidate. He had informed the Special Branch Police the details of his programme.

He said he arrived in Kannur via Kozhikode. He addressed the media well after the conclusion of polling at 5.15 p.m. He visited a private hospital at Vadakara where three UDF workers were undergoing treatment for injuries sustained on poll day. Later, he visited some UDF workers admitted to the Kozhikode Medical College before returning to Ernakulam by train in the night.

Mr. Chandy maintained that at no point of time had he violated the model code or the provisions of the Act.

The Election Commission’s letter did not mention specific provisions that had been purportedly violated by Mr. Chandy, sources said.

Staff Reporter writes from Alappuzha: Speaking to reporters in Alappuzha, Mr. Chandy said the Congress did not have the habit of leaving the fate of its workers to the brutalities of the CPI(M). Whenever the CPI(M) had unleashed violence in Kannur, or for that matter in any district, he had visited those areas and made all efforts to restore peace. He said he did not understand the statement of the Chief Minister that the controversy over his visit was an issue between Mr. Chandy and the Home Minister.
