New blocks opened at central jail

Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan on Thursday inaugurated the newly-constructed ‘A' and ‘F' blocks of the Viyyur central Jail. In all, 280 inmates may be accommodated in the new blocks, according to jail officials.

Earlier, the Minister visited the site of the Kendriya Vidyalaya school being set up on the campus of the Kerala Police Academy at Ramavarmapuram here. He said classes are expected to begin on August 16.

The academy had recently expressed its inability to provide facilities on the campus for starting the Vidyalaya immediately. The new school is being set up on 6.11 acres of land leased by the government to the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan.

The Home Minister told reporters after visiting the site that hurdles had been cleared for starting the school. Two buildings on the academy campus had been temporarily allotted to the school.

Seventeen seats would be reserved annually for students recommended by the academy. Revenue Minister K. P. Rajendran said that Rs. 25 lakh would be sanctioned for improving drinking water supply in the area.
