NGO association flays Government move

Thiruvananthapuram: The NGO Association has questioned the government’s moral right to take action against officials over the Merchiston Estate deal.

In a statement here on Saturday, Kottathala Mohanan, general secretary of the association, alleged that the Government was stonewalling the demand for a investigation into the issue, though most parties in both the fronts had sought it. How could such a government take action against the officials, he asked. He described as ridiculous the statements made by the Forests Minister to justify his position and the alleged interventions being made by Veliyam Bhargavan, Communist Party of India State secretary, to save him. He warned that the association would launch an agitation if the Government made officials scapegoats.

He said the powerful land mafia had succeeded in bringing under its control even the Revenue and Forests Ministers.
