Missing buoy recovered

Kochi: The Coast Guard and the Marine Enforcement Wing recovered a National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) buoy 15 hours after it was reported missing on Sunday.

According to a press release issued by the Coast Guard District operations Commandant Rakesh Rai, NIO on Sunday evening reported that an acoustic current meter buoy that was moored some 85 nautical miles west of Kollam at a depth of 100 metres had gone missing. The buoywas being used by the NIO to measure the speed and direction of current at various depths. It had a built-in GPS (global positioning system) and cost about Rs.50 lakh. “It has come to light that a fishing boat, Mangalathu Gopalan (registration number 2061), had picked up the buoy at sea,” informed the Coast Guard. —Staff Reporter
