Missile project head felicitated

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Tessy Thomas, popularly known as the ‘Missile woman,’ Project Director of India’s missile programme ‘Agni – 5,’ was accorded a warm welcome here by the Women Scientists’ Cell of the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment on Saturday.

Minister for Health P.K. Sreemathy inaugurated the function. E.P. Yasodharan, Science and Technology Principal Secretary; Mridul Eapen, member, State Planning Board; R. Renuka Nair, scientist, Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology; and K.R. Lekha, head of the Women Scientists’ Cell; spoke on the occasion.

Ms. Sreemathy, in her inaugural address, said the State was proud of the achievements of Ms. Thomas. Women from Kerala were ahead in all fields and the State was encouraging that tradition by enacting the law that allowed more women to participate in local body administration, she pointed out.

In her address, Ms. Thomas, said the missile development programme was important for the nation’s security. Though as a woman, she had to face several challenges in the way of her work, the fact that she was doing her duty to the nation encouraged her to move forward courageously, she said.

In an interactive session that followed, Ms. Thomas shared her experiences in the field with young scientists.
