Kochi: Demanding release of oil tanker Hebei Spirit’s Captain Jasprit Chawla and First Officer Shyam Chetan, who were jailed by South Korea in December 2007 on charges of causing oil spill off the Port of Daesan, Merchant Navy Officers’ Welfare Association, India, took out a protest rally in the city on Sunday.
International Transport Federation regional secretary Mahindra Sarma flagged off the vehicle rally at Willingdon Island at 4 p.m. Cadets from Cochin Shipyard Training Institute, KM School Of Marine Engineering, Institute of Marine Engineers and Central Institute of Fisheries, Nautical and Engineering Training joined the rally. At Marine Drive where it ended, Prof K.A. Simon, principal of KM School of Marine Engineering, and Capt. George of Company of Master Mariner addressed the rally.
