Mavoor panchayat to set up biogas plants

Staff Reporter

KOZHIKODE: The Mavoor grama panchayat in the district will soon set up two biogas units under the Comprehensive Health Cleanliness programme.

Of these, one plant will take up waste treatment at the panchayat’s fish market and another, near the old panchayat office, will undertake treatment of solid waste.

The panchayat has already signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Integrated Rural Technology Centre, Palakkad, for setting up the plants. The construction will begin soon, C. Govindankutty, panchayat secretary, said.

The local people have complained about the pollution caused by the fish market, which is a 10-cent plot near Kulimadu Road. The waste water from the market will be purified and other waste converted into compost. This compost will be sold in the local market.
