Literary festival begins at Adoor

PATHANAMTHITTA: Literary Fiesta-2008, a two-day literary festival, organised by the Department of English at St. Cyril’s College, Adoor began at the college auditorium on Thursday.

Thomas Mar Athanasios, Metropolitan of Chengannur diocese of Malankara Orthodox Church, inaugurated the programme. College Principal John M. George and programme co-ordinator Jacob Abraham spoke.

Friday being a holiday for the college owing to certain unforeseen circumstances, the programme will conclude on

Saturday, according to the Principal.

Staging of the Malayalam Kathakali version of ‘Oedipus Rex of Sophocles’ was the main attraction at the festival in the afternoon. Another Kathakali performance on the Shakespearean play, ‘The Tempest,’ will be held on Saturday. Madhavan Varanasi (Madhavan Nampoothiri), English lecturer, rendered the Kathakali verses.

Teams from Pandalam NSS College and Assumption College, Changanassery, won the first and second prize respectively at the inter-university literary quiz competition held on Thursday.

An exhibition on literary schools, literary movements and eminent men of letters has also been organised as part of the programme. A seminar and debate highlighting the latest trends in art and literature will be held on Saturday.

District panchayat president Appinazhakathu Santhakumari will inaugurate the valedictory function on Saturday afternoon. Mathews Mar Epiphanios, college manager, will bless the meet.

Luba Shield who runs a cultural centre at Aranmula will deliver the keynote address.
