V. Rajendra Babu is tipped for the post

KOLLAM: CPI(M) leader V. Rajendra Babu, who represents the Uliyakovil East division in the City Corporation Council, is understood to be selected by the party as the candidate for the mayor's post.

Given the Left Democratic Front's majority in the council, Mr. Rajendra Babu will in all probability be elected as the new Mayor on Tuesday.

Mr. Rajendra Babu's name was finalised by the CPI(M) district committee last week. But the name can be formally announced only after the meetings of the party's Kollam Corporation sub-committee, the CPI(M) parliamentary party in the council and the LDF parliamentary party. All these three meetings will be held and completed by 10 a.m. on Tuesday following which the LDF parliamentary party will formally announce Mr. Rajendra Babu as the LDF candidate for the mayor's post.

The State Election Commission had earlier scheduled the election of the new mayor on Tuesday. The vacancy arose as a result of the resignation of N. Padmalochanan.

The 52-year-old Mr. Rajendra Babu entered politics through the SFI. While doing his graduation and post-graduation in Political Science at the SN College here, he was arts club secretary, magazine editor and union chairman of the college. While studying at Government Law College, Thiruvananthapuram, he was elected chairman of the Kerala University Union.
