Karim to lay stone for factory

Industries Minister Elamaram Karim will lay the foundation stone for a coir pith block factory at Beypore on Thursday. The Minister will also inaugurate a de-fibering unit and a coir spinning centre.

Cooperation Minister G. Sudhakaran will preside over the function. M.K. Raghavan, MP, will deliver the keynote address.

State Coir Corporation Chairman G. Venugopal; Managing Director P.V. Saseendran; Special Secretary Rani George; District Collector P.B. Salim; and representatives of local-self government bodies will participate.

The government has sanctioned Rs.317.15 lakh for various industry development programmes under the Beypore coir cluster.

For the development of the cluster alone, the Central government has sanctioned Rs.92 lakh under the Scheme of Fund for Regeneration of Traditional Industries.

Hush shortage

To address the shortage of husk, the cluster will seek the support of various self-help groups in Malabar.

The plan of the Coir Department is to assign the self-help groups the task of procuring husk and make it available at the processing units.
