KOCHI: Former President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam will deliver the Krishna Menon Memorial Lecture 2009 on ‘Evolution of enlightened society’ on Thursday at TDM Hall in the city. Former judge of the Supreme Court, V. R. Krishna Iyer’s autobiography titled “Wandering in Many Worlds” will be released by Dr. Kalam at the function that will begin at 10 a.m. The Chief Justice of Kerala, S.R. Bannurmath, will receive the first copy of the book.

At another function, Dr. Kalam will inaugurate a modern diagnostic tool to detect early stage cancer at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences.

Addressing a press meet in this regard, Prathapan Nair, principal of the Amrita School of Medicine along with Shanmugham Sundaram, head of department, Nuclear Medicine, AIMS, said the new technology, using a combination of Positron Emitting Tomography (PET) simultaneously with a CT scan, is one of the most modern techniques used in cancer detection.

Called the PET CT scan, which uses a radioactive substance called fluro deoxy glucose (FDG18), it is said to detect even the smallest cancer lesions, particularly in organs like the lungs, lymph nodes and bones, said Dr. Sundaram. The radiation dose is comparatively less in comparison to a regular CT scan.

The function at the Amrita Hospital at 4 p.m. would also be attended by noted nuclear medicine physician, R. D. Lele, from Mumbai.
