Thrissur: Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) has demanded a one-time grant of Rs.109 crore from the State government to solve its financial crisis, Vice-Chancellor K.R. Viswambaran has said.

Addressing the general council of the KAU at Vellanikkara on Tuesday, he said the university required a monthly grant of Rs.10 crore to disburse salary and pension. But the monthly non-plan grant received was only Rs.5.6 crore. “Severe financial crisis has affected research and development activities and prompt disbursal of pension and provident fund loan. The university has submitted a detailed proposal for getting the one-time grant,” Mr. Viswambaran said.

The university has submitted a proposal to Union Minister for Agriculture Sharad Pawar for sanctioning a grant of Rs.100 crore for infrastructure development and undertaking research in priority areas. Executive committee member Rajaji Mathew Thomas, MLA, said a change in the entrance system for admitting students to undergraduate courses was under consideration.
