Prize catch: Imported liquor bottles seized by Commercial Taxes officials in Kollam on Monday.

The Intelligence wing of the Commercial Taxes Department (CTD) seized 36 one-litre bottles of imported liquor from a Thiruvananthapuram-bound luxury bus during a check here early Wednesday morning.

The check was part of an exercise to prevent entry of goods into the State evading commercial taxes during the Onam season.

Costly brands

Intelligence wing Assistant Commissioner E. Kamarudin said that the bottles were packed in three airbags. The brands were costly ones. The man carrying the liquor bottles was identified as Anil Kumar 37, a native of Thiruvananthapuram.

Since it was an offence under the Abkari Act, the CTD officers informed the Excise Department of the seizure and Anil Kumar was arrested by excise personnel and the bus taken into custody. Anil Kumar told the excise officers that he had purchased the bottles from the Karipur international airport in Kozhikode. The bottles were meant for sale in Thiruvananthapuram.
