Hunger strike at port continues

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: The indefinite hunger strike by leaders of the trade unions at Kochi Port continued for the second day on Saturday.

The hunger strike is part of the protest action against implementation of new manning scales. Marine crew of the Port continued to stay away from their work on Saturday, said a press release from Kochi Thuramugha Samrakshana Samithi here.

The striking employees took a march to the gates of the hotel on Willingdon Island where the core committee meeting of Indian Ports Association was held on Saturday. The Indian Ports Association meets here on Monday.

The federations of trade unions have decided not to attend any meeting convened by individual port managements as the strike is against the implementation of a Central Industrial Tribunal award.
